My paintings grouped as “JAZZ ICONS” were exhibited at Gallery FE in Istanbul and, as an extensionof 17th Ankara International Jazz Festival, in Ankara, Turkey.
Being inspired by “Byzantine Icons”,I interpreted the jazz artistswith the statement “JAZZ: Faultless Collectivism of Blessed Individualism” using acrylic on canvas.
My objective was to reflect the respect that was directed to the God with the images on icons, to jazz music through the portraits of the artists. I took into consideration the individualism shown by solos and the collectivism presented by group performances.
I wanted to facilitate an emotional dialog, similar to one between the icons and persons communicating with them, with the Jazz artist on the canvas.
In these paintings, I presented the planar plasticity of icons by white geometrical spaces on black backgrounds which is a reference to the blues and difficult living conditions existed at the roots of Jazz.I expressed the musical discord and perfect unison of the jazz players, whose individuality shine out when they play solo, during their collective performances by rainbow colors on their instruments and identified such colors, reminding musical harmony, with gilded backgrounds of icons.
In my lateworks Iaim to address the emotions of viewers and create a sense of rhythm using simple geometrical forms and the plain effect of black and white.
These are 190*33 cm, 100*70 cm and 50*70 cm works with acrylic on canvas. I transfer my A4 size drawings to canvas using folio masks and apply the rainbow colors by Airbrush. My jigsaw works shown on photographs are made by laser cutting 3 mm thick stainless steel plates and suspending the pieces on the background.
